Background and Medical Significance
For our digital media project, our group has decided to
investigate the effectiveness of a certain type of diet pills -classified as
orlistat- that helps treat obesity by reducing intestinal fat absorption by
inhibiting pancreatic lipase. We will focus on the mass and energy
conservations of the system.Diet pills, formally known as an anti-obesity medication, are primarily used by patients with obesity. Obesity, not to be confused with being overweight, implies an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity may result from an imbalance in diet and calorie usage and may also be affected by various factors such as genetic makeup, overeating, high-fat diets, and lack of physical exercise. According to a 2012 survey by the CDC, it is estimated that about 34.9% of adults in the United States are obese. With such a high prevalence, obesity often leads to various other serious diseases such as heart disease. Although the most effective treatments recommend a regimen of low fat diets and exercise, anti-obesity drugs offer an optimistic supplemental treatment that helps treat obesity.
